In episode 46, I respond to some of the disagreement emails and some genuine hate mail that was prompted by podcast 45.  I’m letting you behind the scenes in this podcast a little bit to illustrate a couple things that may help you guys.  Firstly, I wanted you guys to hear about this debate because, undoubtedly, if you ever put even a regular collar on your dog, you may get lectures about how mean and cruel you are to your dog.  Understanding some of this discussion may help you put that sort of feedback in context.  Additionally though, some of this feedback is a good, case in point, example of some myths and misunderstandings that some people have when training dogs.

My Bias in Dog Training:

  • Rules and obedience skills offer dogs more freedom in the long run
  • Be consistent and fair when you’re using any dog training equipment
  • Generally, tools and equipment don’t cause confusion in a dog – trainers do.

Main philosophical points from this podcast:

  • Think critically about what you hear anyone say about dog training (or anything really)
  • If you disagree with someone, state your case clearly and be a little open minded to the idea that other people may come to different conclusions than you do about things
  • It’s probably never a good idea threaten to harm someone because you disagree with them
