10 of the Quietest Dog Breeds
Whether you live close to others, like in an apartment, or you just want to find a dog that doesn’t bark incessantly, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a compilation of over 10 of the quietest dog breeds.
-
Whippet
These dogs love to hunt. They’re independent and fast but also very gentle and friendly, and they make great companions. Though they don’t bark much, they’re athletic and require a lot of exercise to burn all of their stored up energy.
-
Italian Greyhound
Italian greyhounds are small, fragile dogs. They’re very smart and can be stubborn, but they rarely bark. They like to remain alert and are very playful and affectionate.
-
Saint Bernard
Saint Bernards are very quiet dogs. They can be shy but stubborn. When well trained, they make great family dogs.
-
Bullmastiff
While these dogs don’t bark much at all, they are very strong-willed and don’t always get along well with other dogs. They are, however, great with people. These dogs are honest, brave, and true! They’ll have your back no matter what.
-
Chinese Shar-Pei
These beautiful, intelligent dogs usually only bark when they need to assert their dominance, such as when something goes wrong or when a stranger approaches. Otherwise, they’re very quiet. They can also be stubborn!
-
Basenji
Basenjis don’t bark…EVER. When they need something, such as to go outside, they make a baying noise. These medium-sized dogs are curious, playful, and affectionate.
-
Borzoi
Borzois, which originated in Russia, are sweet, graceful, and great with kids. These are the kinds of dogs depicted in many royal European family portraits. They are very laid back and usually silent. They’re also very tall!
-
Bernese Mountain Dog
These Swiss working dogs were bred to pull heavy objects and herd livestock. They are large, strong, and calm. If you decide to get a “Berner,” realize that these dogs typically only live about 6-8 years. Make sure to buy from a responsible breeder with a good reputation.
-
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
These little lapdogs are energetic people pleasers and hate being left alone. They’re generally very quiet but may bark at strangers to welcome them into the home!
-
Great Dane
The Great Dane is not only the largest dog out there, weighing anywhere from 100 to 200 pounds, but one of the quietest as well. These gentle giants are very sweet in nature. When they do bark, which is extremely rare, the deep, loud noise they make can be frightening and scare off anyone or anything that isn’t welcome. Their great strength and nobility are also to be admired.
Other quiet dog breeds:
- Golden Retriever
- Mastiff
- Bloodhound
- French Bulldog
- Irish Setter
- Great Pyrenees
- Newfoundland
